Nico Masemolo

Nico Masemolo

Nico Masemolo was a young boy when I first met him at Hylton Nel’s house in Bethulie eight or nine years ago.

He is now 21 and moved to Calitzdorp several years ago with Nel, whose ward and protégé he is.

Hylton Nel is not only our finest ceramic artist but is, I believe, one of our greatest artists in any medium as well as being formidably well informed about many subjects from Oriental Art to old fashioned roses. Growing up in this milieu and learning technique from the master is the best thing that could have happened to Nico whose ceramic sculptures are quite wonderful. They are fresh, funny, technically good and naïve in the best sense of the word.

Sir John Tenniel, the original illustrator of “Alice” would feel a kinship and if any collector wants to get in at the very beginning of a career then this show is their opportunity.
