BIOGRAPHY
This superb example of Pierneef’s work was painted c.1950 when the
artist was at the height of his powers. The bushveld of the Northern
Transvaal (now Limpopo) was beloved by the artist and furnished the
scenes for his most important works.
This painting (which is in pristine condition) was acquired directly from
the artist by the buyer a farmer from the Karoo, and has hung in the
farmhouse ever since. It has not been seen or exhibited in public for
over 70 years. The frame is original.
I have handled some magnificent Pierneefs in the last fifty years (my
father, Everard Read gave the artist his last exhibition) but this work
stands supreme. Its rich and glowing presence and perfect condition is rendered even
better by its being previously unknown to lovers of the work of Pierneef.
