WIM BOTHA - TIME MACHINE
August 19, 2024
Wim Botha (b.1974) is a leading South African contemporary artist best known for his sculptural works.
A defining feature of Botha’s practice is the diverse and often unconventional media he employs – from carved books, marble, bronze and wood, to oil paint and ink.
The materials he employs are intricately linked with his aim to delve into history, religion, social status, and authority from an art historical perspective. This reflects Botha's questioning of established ideologies—by transforming familiar symbols from European art, antiquities, and his personal cultural and political background, he seeks to understand their relevance within a contemporary South African setting.
"Time Machine" (2012) is a sculptural installation made of white neon and wood. It represents a dynamic fusion of contrasting black and white shapes, forming an intentionally asymmetrical piece. Botha frequently explores the concept of refraction in his art, referring to the way light transforms by splitting into a visible rainbow spectrum or distorting when passing through materials like glass, prisms, or bulbs.
