King’s coronation painter finds his way to Knysna Fine Art gallery
June 10, 2025 - ELAIN KING | KNYSNA-PLETT HERALD
As the official coronation portrait of King Charles III - an artwork by British painter Peter Kuhfeld – was unveiled in London this month, so miraculously did a painting by the very same artist pop up at the Knysna Fine Art Gallery of all places in the world.
The coronation portrait of King Charles was unveiled in May at the National Gallery in London and will be on display in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace from July 2025.
Meanwhile Peter Kuhfeld’s painting titled Sun In The Acers, Woman With Parasol – an oil on canvas - is garnering much attention at Knysna Fine Art Gallery because well…the painter is famous after all…and it’s very beautiful.
This artwork of Kuhfeld was done some about 10 years ago and it has come into Knysna Fine Art for sale as a private consignment.
Kuhfeld was born in 1952 and is an English figurative painter. He was born in Cheltenham and is married to the English figurative painter Cathryn Kuhfeld, née Showan.
In 1986, King Charles commissioned Kuhfeld to paint his sons William and Harry and it’s no secret that Kuhfeld has been a favoured artist of King Charles III since 1990, when he first accompanied him (as Prince of Wales) as tour artist on a visit to Nigeria, Cameroon and Tunisia. Since then, Kuhfeld has joined the King on five further overseas tours. Kuhfeld also photographed the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011.
Coronation portraits have for centuries been part a traditional part of the crowning of a monarch.
The painting of King Charles by Peter Kuhfeld shows him in the regalia he wore two years ago for the lavish crowing ceremony. While Kuhfeld was especially chosen by the King for this painting, Queen Camilla chose to be painted by British artist Paul Benney.
“While taking care to incorporate the symbols of monarchy in a manner appropriate for an official Coronation portrait, in this painting Kuhfeld also sought to capture the King’s personality and character that he has come to know over the course of his career,” says Royal Collection Trust.
According to the New York Times, the coronation painting took Kuhfeld a year and a half to finish with the end result that it was both “both human and regal.”
