PHILLEMON HLUNGWANI - MANANA, I WA NKOKA EKA MINA (MOTHER, YOU ARE SO SPECIAL TO ME)
May 28 – Jun 20, 2022

In this exhibition Phillemon Hlungwani shows us again his total command of his medium, his fine technique, and his superb drafting skills.
Again he returns to his people, his village and the veld and the fields that surround it to explore a subject that he has made his own and which he feels has so much more to reveal to him and hence to his audience.
Hlungwani knows the poverty, the privations, and the toil of his subjects but he also knows their joys, both large and small and he is a witness to, and a believer in the redemptive power of work and the rewards it can offer.
His drawings are always assured and never tentative and although capable of great delicacy in his line and often tender in his vision, his work always has a visible strength and confidence that mirrors the artist.
